What care does hospice home care provide?

Answered By Editor

Hospice home care consists of comfort care and pain control for the patient. In most cases, it also provides spiritual support for caregivers. Most people are eligible for hospice care if they are deemed to have six months or less to live.

Once admitted to the program, a hospice case worker will determine, in conjunction with the patient's physician, what types of physical and emotional support is needed. For example, patients will receive a variety of pain control medications to help their quality of life in the time they have remaining. Hospice home care service can also help with medications schedules, i.e. keeping logs so that family members know when to administer meds, etc. Durable medical supplies are also part of the home care program.

Many hospice organizations also provide spiritual guidance, financial planning and other end-of-life assistance for both the patient and his or her family. Hospice workers are truly angels of mercy who assist in the transition from terminal illness to a peaceful death. The type of home care provided is individualized to each patient, but the goal is pain control, comfort and death with dignity.

Some hospices will offer information to family members of local resources, such as financial help, and food assistance.
